September monthly blog

This month has been an experience beyond anything else. This month I have gathered so much knowlege about working on a college newspaper that I believe will help me in the future when I go and work on my college news paper.

For example one thing I thought was a really good thing to learn is how to use in-design. It is a program which lets you do multiple layouts for the newspaper, yearbook, or even textbook. The interesting part is when you come up with new creations on in-design that help the newspaper look better.
This picture above is an actual image of in-design where you can see all the text box layouts and the formating. Another good way to see what would look good is if you take the text boxes and arange them around the picture your going to use like in a magazine (Down below). The red lines around the pictures states the boundaries that the picture creates within the layout itself. Everything about the way things are payed out and put in and typed up is the best part of being a publisher and I'm glad I get to be a part of this adventure.

The best part about all of the hard work on in-design is seeing the final product actually come out looking fantastic and i wouldn't of been able to even do this without the help of my mentor/ helping mind Salina Nasir. She has taught me so much about writing a newspaper and what its like to have the craziness of publishing day brought on your shoulders. she is a very talented worker and I'm glad to have her as my mentor.

Blog #10: EQ

Content

1.   I reviewed the rule of three for writing an EQ.
  •  Provide a framework for studies (It calls for breadth and depth of research, is not a yes/no question)
  •  Take a stance (It allows you to argue some point. Cannot be a recitation of facts or a list)
  •  Format (It is specific. The wording makes sense)

2.  Review the following EQs and
  • Tell us if each meets the rule of three.
  • Tell why they do or don't.
 a.  What is the most important factor in healthy weight loss?
  •  This EQ meets the rule of three because it gives a wide space for research for the author.
 b.  What is most important to securing a conviction in a criminal investigation?
  •  this EQ meets the rule of three because it allows the author to look up past convictions and what made them successful.
 c.  What is most important in creating a hairstyle that best satisfies a customer?
  •  this EQ doesn't meet the rule of three because it is very opinionated.
 d.  How can an anesthesiologist best treat chronic pain?
  •  This EQ meets the rule of three because it will have good research behind it and will have many different point.

3.  Based on your review of the rule of 3 and your experience with assessing four EQs, please write another draft EQ for your senior project.  The senior team will be meeting with students shortly for EQ revision and approval; you are expected to bring your research notebook to that meeting with your EQ draft written inside in pencil.

  •  How has consumers preference for electronic books changed the publishing industry?

Blog #9: Lesson 1 Reflection

1. Positive Statement

What are you most proud of in your Lesson 1 Presentation and why?

  • I'm most proud of the fact that I didn't stutter when I was presenting because its usually hard for me not to when I'm in front of a crowd.

2. Questions to Consider
       a.     What assessment would you give yourself on your Lesson 1 Presentation (self-assessment)?

       AE       P          AP       CR       NC

  • I would give myself a AP- or CR because I wasn't as prepared as I should've been and I know there were a lot of things i did't cover.

       b.     Explain why you deserve that grade using evidence from the Lesson 1 component contract.

  • We were supposed to state our sources throughout our presentation and I forgot. I also didn't have a structured talking point and I know I confused a lot of the students and quite possibly our teacher.

3. What worked for you in your Lesson 1?
  • I was able to get my point across.
4.  (What didn't work) If you had a time machine, what would you have done differently to improve your Lesson 1?

  • I would definitely be more prepared and have some notecard to remind me what to say exactly. I have problems remembering what I need to and at times it gets hard for me to concentrate.

October Post

So this month I started my mentorship at poly post. This is a magazine on cal poly pomona's campus. I am in charge of a lot while I'm mentoring there. First I am working on editing most of the newspaper with the editorial group of kids. The fun thing I learned this month is how to use in-design. It is quite interesting when you learn how to do layouts on the computer. Before computers we are supposed to take a hard copy and put the articles in order and then we take them and put them in in-design and work on them. for the most part thats all I'm doing but the learning process was hard. I had to really pay attention to details and make sure i hadn't messed up anything so that when the paper got published there were no noticeable mistakes.
this is a version of the poly post. this is what I work on every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and sometimes on Saturday.

Blog # 8: Research and Working EQ

1.  What is your working EQ?
  • In what way has publishing a book changed over time during the 21st century?
2.  What is a possible answer to your working EQ? Please write the answer in thesis format.
  • Publishing over the years has been digitalized and has become a new generation of technology with new advancements and jobs available. (Answer still in the working)
3.  What is the most important source you have used that has helped you come up with an answer to your working EQ?
  • my most important source i have used that helped me come up with an answer for my working EQ is the book called "all the things you would ever write. " it has so much information on certain ideas about writing in general.
4.  Who is your mentor, or where are you doing mentorship, and how does what you are doing relate to your working EQ?
  • My mentor is Dr. Douglas Spoon and I am doing my mentorship at the Poly Post newspaper and this relates to my working EQ because the newspapers used to be only in print and now the newspapers are on the internet and now anyone can access them.

Blog #7 : Independent Component

1.  Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.
  • For my independent component I will be going to a research class that my mother teaches twice a week for three hours but I will also be writing a book on the life of Ipoly and self-publishing it at the end of senior project. The class includes different way to look up articles and book needed for a good research paper and also how to make an annotated bibliography. This class will tie into what we are doing for senior project as well because of the research we are doing to find more information on our topic. The book I will be writing will be all about the Ipoly life and will have interviews from many students and teachers about the school. I will try to get at least 20 different point of views from kids at I-poly and try to interview all the teachers that haven't left I-poly to get a better and broader area to work with.
2.  Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.
  • I will be showing 30 hours worth of evidence by interviewing people at school but also have my mom sign a paper saying when I was in class and for how long. I will also update the hours log as I go along.
3.  And explain how what you will be doing will help you explore your topic in more depth.
  • What I'm doing will help me explore my topic in depth by giving me a look onto how it feels to have to do so much research and also gives me a feel for being an self-publishing author. It gives me a chance to explore and divulge in everything having to do with self- publishing including editing and writing and rewriting the work. I believe this will be a great experience for me.
4.  Update your Senior Project Hours log.
  • Senior Project Hours are updated.

Monthly Blog

Something I learned while doing research this month is the many different things about publishing and writing. For example while I was looking up different articles and book I came across an article published just last year about different jobs that have just come into the world of publishing. these jabs are : Digital Publishing, Editorial Publishing, Sales Publishing, and Audience Development.  All of these jobs were not here just two years ago and that shows a big improvement on the publishing Job.
